How Valuable are our Possessions?
The idea of keeping up with the Jones’ has been in our culture forever. But having material things is not a measure of your love, or a measure of the blessings God has given us. This doesn’t mean we can’t have nice and fun things. It’s about what is in your heart. Is that “thing” a form of measurement in your life? That’s idolatry. That’s a sin. Turn your heart to God, don’t let possessions, be your measure. Give your heart and your mind to God, and he will bless you, and you will enjoy your possessions even more, because of Him.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2 ESV
In Matthew, the story of the rich young man, the man asks Jesus what else he needs to do to be saved? Jesus tells him to keep the Commandments, and tells the man what those are.
“The young man said to Him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Matthew 19:20-21 ESV
The man couldn’t give up his possessions, so he went away. God wants you to put Him first. He wants you to not let idolatry be your sins.
“And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”Matthew 19:23-24 ESV
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 ESV
Dear Heavenly Father, creator of Heaven and Earth, comfort me in your presence that I may not seek worldly things for comfort. Help me to seek you always and to obey your commandments. And if You ask me to give up my possessions, so I will do. I love You and praise You. In Jesus’ precious and powerful name, Amen.
